“The Covenant of Water”: A Mesmerizing Journey through Kerala’s Three Generations

In an awe-inspiring tale that blends love, faith, and the wonders of medicine, Abraham Verghese takes readers through the mystic landscapes of Kerala, tracing the lives of three generations harboring a mysterious family secret.

Titled “The Covenant of Water,” this magnum opus spans the era between 1900 to 1977, set against the backdrop of Kerala’s picturesque Malabar Coast. With every generation, the family faces the hauntingly recurrent fate of one member meeting their end through drowning. In a land where water is omnipresent, the dilemma is both geographical and metaphysical. Anchoring the family’s narrative is Big Ammachi, the matriarch whose lifespan encompasses transformative societal shifts both domestically and globally. Verghese, with his trademark brilliance, stitches together monumental moments of medical marvels, riveting humor, heart-wrenching stories, and characters brimming with life’s essence.

Heralded as one of the most masterful literary works in recent times, “The Covenant of Water” serves as a reflection of a bygone India and the inexorable march of time. Beyond its storytelling marvel, it stands as a testament to medical advancements, humanity’s perpetual quest for understanding, and the enduring sacrifices of previous generations that shape the present.

About the Author:

Dr. Abraham Verghese is not just a renowned author, but a figure of prominence in the medical field. Currently serving as a Professor for the Theory and Practice of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine, his extensive experience stretches across multiple dimensions. Born to Indian educators in Ethiopia, Verghese’s journey from the corridors of Addis Ababa, through the medical halls of Madras Medical College, to the shores of the United States, is both diverse and enlightening.
