Winner of the 2017 Casey Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year.
From Babe Ruth to Mickey Mantle, the legendary figure Charles Dillon “Casey” Stengel connected with some of baseball’s most iconic players and moments, carving out an illustrious career spanning five decades. Celebrated New York Yankees’ historian and bestselling author Marty Appel now brings to life the man who revolutionized the role of baseball manager in his latest masterpiece: “Casey Stengel.”
Described by The New York Times as “the ultimate biography,” this comprehensive portrait unravels the mystery behind the beloved face of baseball, illuminating the quirks, humor, and genius of a man who, despite his fame, remains something of an enigma.
As a player, Stengel shared the field with legends like Honus Wagner and Christy Mathewson. Later, as a manager, he navigated the intricate dynamics of relationships with greats such as Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, and Billy Martin. Yet, behind the laughter and leadership was a private man whose personal life has largely remained undisclosed—until now.
Drawing from never-before-seen family documents, Marty Appel delves deep into Stengel’s personal and professional life, offering fans a matchless and intimate portrait. This rich tapestry of baseball stories, historical perspective, and personal insights paints a picture of a man who, in many ways, was as much a master of reinvention as he was a master of the game.
