Acclaimed Lebanese author Hanan al-Shaykh breathes new life into the centuries-old tales, delivering a modern rendition in English.

A masterpiece that has enchanted readers for generations, “One Thousand and One Nights” traces its origins from India, Persia, and regions across the Arab world. These captivating stories, recounted by the young and beautiful Shahrazad in a bid to postpone her impending execution, have now been masterfully retold in modern English by the renowned Lebanese author, Hanan al-Shaykh.

Spanning nineteen tales, al-Shaykh’s rendition is a tapestry of life’s complexities—embracing the realm of the supernatural, the intricacies of love and marriage, the dynamics of power and retribution, the contrasts of wealth and poverty, and the unpredictable nature of fate. These stories, though age-old, remain ever-relevant, reflecting the multifaceted human experience.

The collection, while retaining the essence of the original tales, is tinged with al-Shaykh’s distinctive touch—imbued with humor, heightened violence, and an undercurrent of romance, making it a compelling read for both enthusiasts of the classic and new readers alike.
